So... Milo hasn't been teething like we thought. He has had Foot, Mouth and Hand Disease (FMHD) which is really just a virus - a relatively minor one at that. We probably never would have realized it either if we had not had a random conversation with our neighbor Robin whose son is just getting over it himself.
Milo has had every symptom. Blisters on his feet (we thought they were ant bites), ulcers in his mouth (hence the teething), severe irritation, nausea, loss of appetite, little sores on his bottom (thought it was diaper rash), etc., etc. Poor little guy, he has had a rough week. He was not himself at all Monday through Wednesday but started to get back to normal on Thursday and is fine today with just some lingering bumps.
Fortunately there is not a treatment for FMHD, it just has to run its course so there is not much we could have done besides what we did do. Still, I am sure this will not be the last time that I wish kids came with an instruction manual or rolling LED display of some sort to help blundering Mommies and Daddies make it through weeks like this.
